Perchlorate in drinking water during pregnancy and neonatal thyroid hormone levels in California.

چکیده
OBJECTIVE To evaluate associations between maternal drinking water perchlorate exposure during pregnancy and newborn thyroid hormone levels. METHODS Elevation in thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), which may reflect reduced thyroxin concentration, was assessed in 497,458 newborns in California in 1998. A total of 800 perchlorate water measurements were used to classify California communities as exposed (>5 μg/L) or unexposed. Results were stratified by age at TSH collection because of the normal postbirth TSH surge, and because water sources and perchlorate exposure can change soon after birth. RESULTS In TSH samples collected within 24 hours of birth, the odds ratio for a TSH greater than 25 μU/mL in exposed communities was 1.53 (P < 0.0001). After 24 hours, the odds ratio for a TSH more than the 95th percentile was 1.27 (P < 0.0001). CONCLUSION These findings suggest that perchlorate is associated with increased neonatal TSH levels.

Thyroid Hormones and Moderate Exposure to Perchlorate during Pregnancy in Women in Southern California
BACKGROUND Findings from national surveys suggest that everyone in the United States is exposed to perchlorate. At high doses, perchlorate, thiocyanate, and nitrate inhibit iodide uptake into the thyroid and decrease thyroid hormone production. Small changes in thyroid hormones during pregnancy, including changes within normal reference ranges, have been linked to cognitive function declines in...
متن کاملGestational exposure to high perchlorate concentrations in drinking water and neonatal thyroxine levels.
OBJECTIVE To assess the effect of gestational perchlorate exposure through drinking water on neonatal thyroxine (T(4)). DESIGN T(4) values were compared among newborns in Ramat Hasharon, Israel, whose mothers resided in suburbs where drinking water contained perchlorate < or = 340 microg/L (very high exposure, n = 97), 42-94 microg/L (high exposure, n = 216), and < 3 microg/L (low exposure, n...
متن کاملThyroid Function and Perchlorate in Drinking Water: An Evaluation among California Newborns, 1998
Perchlorate (ClO4-) has been detected in groundwater sources in numerous communities in California and other parts of the United States, raising concerns about potential impacts on health. For California communities where ClO4- was tested in 1997 and 1998, we evaluated the prevalence of primary congenital hypothyroidism (PCH) and high thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels among the 342,257 C...
متن کاملRELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MODE OF DELIVERY AND NEONATAL THYROID HORMONE LEVELS AT BIRTH: A NARRATIVE REVIEW
Thyroid hormones are essential for normal development of fetus. After birth changes in thyroid hormone enable the neonate to be adapted for postnatal life. Accordingly, attention to the level of neonatal thyroid hormones at birth is important. Several maternal and environmental factors influence this adaption. Various studies have shown the association of different neonatal, maternal, and pregn...

Background and Objectives: Perchlorate, as an emerging contaminant, has attracted notice of the most individuals and organizations. Presence of perchlorate in the human body can lead to inappropriate regulation of metabolism in adults. Moreover, due to inhibition of iodide uptake in the thyroid gland, it causes neurological and behavioral problems in infants and children. United States Environm...
